These skill sets are for individuals who will be responsible for stopping and starting traffic in Temporary Traffic Management on urban streets and low volume rural roads and for traffic management implementation.

TTM Category 1 are inclusive of single carriageway roads with a posted speed limit of:

• less than 60 km/h where the AADT is less than 10,000, or
• 110 km/h or less where the AADT is less than 3,000

This course is offered on both weekdays and weekends, with indoor and outdoor assessment conditions available.

Traffic Skill Set Category 1 Course Details and Duration

The combined TC1 and TMI1 course will run over (3) three days 21 hours.

The first two days will focus on the theory aspects of the units with the third day being dedicated to the practical application.

Units covered include:

• RIICOM201E Communicate in the workplace
• RIIWHS205E Control traffic with stop-slow bat
• RIIWHS206 Control traffic with portable traffic control devices and temporary traffic signs
• RIIRIS301E Apply risk management processes
• RIIWHS302E Implement traffic management plans
• RIIWHS303 Position, set up and program portable traffic control devices

Austroads Practical Logbook Completion and live assessment

Post course TC1 - following a period in which the learner logs 20 hours or more of practical training experience, not more than six months following the course. The practical assessment (post completion of the 20 hours) will be conducted in a live traffic scenario under supervision or alternatively under a *supervised simulation.

Post course TMI1 - within a 6-month period of completing the theoretical component of the course, the learner will complete (3) three different setups based on Traffic Management Plans and Traffic Guidance Schemes relevant to their working conditions. You will be required to be assessed on (1) one of the (3) three live set ups, with a approved assessor, this can be completed via live teleconference, recorded video or in person, please discuss with your assessor.

Please Note: As part of any work placement in Victoria you will be required to complete a signed workplace agreement with your traffic management company, prior to commencing any work-based placement.

(TC1 / TM1) Category 1 Traffic Course Prerequisites

The following pre-requisites apply for participants of the (TC1 / TM1) Category 1 Traffic Course in Melbourne:

• CPCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry (White Card)
• Photo proof of ID (drivers' licence/passport).

Note: Please inform us upon registration If you feel you have any literacy or numeracy difficulties. Some reasonable adjustments to the course can be made to assist.

Completion

On successful completion of all parts of this (3) three-day course you will receive a statement of attainment and your Austroads Traffic TC1 & TMI1 card under the skills sets RIISS00058 Traffic Controller Skill Set for Urban Streets and Low Volume Rural Roads and (TM1) RIISS00060 Traffic Management Implementer Skill Set for Urban Streets and Low Volume Rural Roads as well as your Austroads.

Credit Transfer - Students have 6 months from completing the theory and classroom practical to obtain credit transfer into the Austroads accreditation.

Pathways

The units provide credit towards several Certificate II and Certificate III qualifications in the RII Resources and Infrastructure Industry Training Package and other training packages, such as RII30920 Certificate III in Civil Construction or equivalent.
