Short Courses Australia provide monthly pest inspection courses for participants seeking employment as a timber pest inspector of residential and commercial properties.

It is a requirement that timber pest inspectors successfully complete the following units of competence:

Short Courses Australia deliver the pest inspection course face to face in a classroom setting over five (5) days.

Students will learn to inspect premises and surrounding areas for timber pests. It includes collecting and testing evidence from the site, assessing the type of timber pest, nature of activity and extent of damage, and preparing an inspection report with recommendations for timber pest management.

Students will learn the required knowledge to prepare and implement a plan to manage timber pests plan. It includes reviewing existing reports relating to timber pest activity at the premises and planning, implementing and monitoring strategies to control timber pests. The unit requires selecting equipment, chemicals, materials and methods to effectively manage the timber pest problem.

In order to be considered competent in the practical component of the training, you are required to complete ten (10) inspections nine (9) of which must be onsite at a live location. Three (3) of these must be under the supervision of the assessor - one instance can be simulated, the other two must be observed at a real workplace - either in person or via visual media means. The other seven (7) inspections may be done under the supervision of a duly authorised workplace supervisor.

The inspections must include:

  • must involve subterranean termites for a minimum of one (1) premises
  • must be in a real workplace for a minimum of two premises
  • may be simulated for one premises provided the simulation allows demonstration of all performance criteria.

The record of these inspections may be completed in the supplied template or using a report from a supervising company's template.

All the reports MUST contain photos.

  • Australian standards: AS/NZS 3660 and AS4349.3.
  • relevant industry codes of practice including:
    • A Code of Practice for Prior to Purchase Specialist Timber Pest Inspections
    • Code of Best Practice for Termite Management
    • Code of Best Practice for Termite Management During Construction.

*A workplace supervisor is a person duly authorised to perform and validate the work being undertaken.

Course Requirements

To successfully complete the course participants are required to:

  • Attend all classroom training sessions;
  • Bring their own Personal Protective Equipment (PPE); when required
  • Complete all activities and assessment which cover the learning outcomes of termite and timber pest management and safety;
  • Complete all practical pest inspection observations under the observation of a qualified pest inspector
  • or source their own licensed pest inspector.

Participants have up to 6 months to complete this course.

Theory Training

The five-day course provides pest inspection training and covers the following learning outcomes:

  • Timber Pest biology and control including termites, borers and wood decay fungi;
  • Australian Standards and other documents pertaining to timber pests;
  • Inspection and reporting of timber pests;
  • Timber pest management;
  • Set up and monitoring of termite programs;
  • Overview of termite management of new buildings;
  • Conflict resolution.

Practical Pest Inspection Observations

On successful completion of the theory training, students will undertake a minimum of 3 inspections as part of their direct studies and observed by the supervisor/assessor.

Students can arrange to undertake inspections with a qualified pest management/inspector; to complete the further 7 inspections, this can be completed in groups and as determined by your assessor.

*Course participants may source their own licenced pest inspector for completion of the practical pest inspections.

Inspection Details

Evidence of assessment for pest management activities in (7) seven of the (10) ten premises must be based on documentation and photographic evidence that has been validated by a workplace supervisor. A workplace supervisor is a person duly authorised to perform and validate the work being undertaken.

This could include a registered Pest inspector or Pest management person or a specific Pest company.

Evidence of assessment for pest management activities in (3) three of the (10 (ten premises as specified in the performance evidence:

  • must be based on direct observation and assessment of the candidate by an assessor:
    • physically, or
    • via audio and visual media provided by the candidate
  • must involve subterranean termites for a minimum of one premises
  • must be in a real workplace for a minimum of (2) two premises
  • may be simulated for (1) one premises provided the simulation allows demonstration of all performance criteria.
