General Pest Management Course in Melbourne

Three nationally recognised units

• CPPUPM3005 — Manage pests without applying pesticides
• CPPUPM3006 — Manage pests by applying pesticides
• CPPUPM3018 — Maintain equipment and pesticide storage area in pest management vehicles

These units are drawn from CPP30119 Certificate III in Urban Pest Management. This short course covers the three units listed above, not the full qualification.

Course duration and training stages

7 training and assessment days, plus 3 days of live placement—10 days in total. Training is offered at our Port Melbourne training centre and/or through real-time connected learning. Check the delivery format for your selected course date.

1. Five days of trainer-led theory and learning. Work through the learning materials, written assessments and practical activities with your trainer.
2. Three days of live placement. Observe and work with a licensed pest management technician in a practical placement.
3. Two days of practical assessment workshops. Complete the summative (final) assessment workshops offered by Short Courses Australia. Workshop dates will be determined towards the end of your class.

What you’ll learn

• Legislation relevant to public health pest control.
• Safe storage and transport of pesticides.
• Vertebrate pest control topics, including rats, mice, birds, possums and feral cats.
• Public health insect biology and control, including cockroaches, ants, wasps, flies, biting insects and stored-product insects.
• Pesticide application equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Selection and use of insecticide and rodenticide formulations.
• Developments in active ingredients, formulations and application techniques.
• Hands-on insect identification, building inspections, risk assessments and general pest management programs.

Practical experience and assessment evidence

To successfully complete the course, undertake 20 live inspection and treatment activities under the supervision of a licensed pest technician. The practical requirements cover two approaches to general pest management:

Keep a practical completion log signed by the licensed pest management technician. Speak with your trainer about the evidence needed for assessment and how your placement will meet these requirements.

Course completion checklist

• Attend all scheduled training sessions.
• Bring your own personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Complete the theory and practical booklets and knowledge quiz.
• Arrange and complete three days of practical experience with a licensed pest management technician.
• Complete the required practical activities, assessments and signed practical completion log.

Statement of Attainment

On successful completion of the training and written and practical assessments, Short Courses Australia (RTO 41261) will issue a Statement of Attainment for CPPUPM3005, CPPUPM3006 and CPPUPM3018.

Your next step towards licensing

Your Statement of Attainment can support an application to the relevant government licensing authority. Completing the course does not automatically issue a pest management licence; the authority determines eligibility and the scope of work authorised.
